I had the opportunity to run as a race ambassador at Madison's Color Me Rad (HERE) even this past weekend on August 31. The race took place at Willow Island at the Alliant Energy Center - just like the Color Run we participated in June. This event seemed to have many more participants - and even more families. There were tons and tons - and tons - of children run/walking. We ran into so many of our friends before and after the race. When I got home and scrolled through my Facebook feed, it seemed that almost everyone was participating with their families.
The event started in organized waves - from 9:00-10:00. I didn't like how we started the first part of the run on grass - and even saw a woman on the ground. The kids maneuvered through the first color station. Then we headed out onto the path through the dog park. Other stations alternated between the colored corn starch powder and watered color. We weren't expecting that, so the kids got excited about getting sprayed. We ran the first 1/2 mile or so and then pretty much walked the rest of the 5K race - with little boughts of running. Little Dude enjoyed sprinting and stopping.
The kids really enjoyed sticking around for the "color bomb" after we crossed the finish line and the mini water bottles at the water station.
I think this might be or last "color event" for awhile, because a few days later, they still had red and green scalps! We appreciated being given the opportunity to participate. And I always love seeing families being active together and the community moving together! Events like this encourage folks of all sorts to get outside, move, and try something new. These events make it FUN and list intimidating to step outside of your comfort zone.
I still haven't done a color or mud or obstacle run. It looks like fun!
