Happy Birthday, Little Diva!

Nine years ago today, I became a mother.

At 23 years old, I don't think I really had any clue what that meant.  I understood the responsibility, the exhaustion and the fun of having a baby.  But, I don't know if I really understood everything that would come with motherhood - down the road.

Little Diva has taught me so many wonderful things about life.  Unconditional love.  That love expands and multiplies.  Patience.  The need for unselfishness at times.  The need for selfishness at times.  Her love for reading has even given me the desire to indulge in a good book.

Thank you for nine years of pure joy and happiness.  For your understanding, mature attitude, motherly nature and abililty to adjust to everything that life throws at you.

I love you.

Love,
Mommy

Quest Nutrition Bar Review & Giveaway

Quest Nutrition (HERE) contacted me about their Protein Bars and Peanut Butter Cups.  Sign me up!  I received a 11 Flavor Sampler Pack (HERE) and a box of Peanut Butter Cups (HERE).

Some of my favorite flavors were PB&J, Apple Pie, Cinnamon Roll and Peanut Butter Pie.  They had many other flavors to try, but these were my favorites - many so different than what I usually have before a workout.

But, Coconut Cashew was one of the best bars I have ever tried.  I honestly had to email my contact at Quest Nutrition right away to let her know how awesome it was.  I love coconut and this bar was sinful!  If you like Mounds Bars - these taste just as good, but are a healthy and filling alternative.  Not to disappoint.

I have kept these in my desk drawer and have been sampling them before a lunchtime run or before the end of the workday, when I need to head out to a coaching session.  The help fill me up, but don't make me feel stuffed, like a meal wood.  They also satisfy my sweet tooth.  They are a heavier consistency, similar to Powerbar.  I hate it when you waste the calories and money on an energy/protein bar and it leaves you hungry, as if you ate nothing.

The kids tried the strawberry cheesecake and peanut butter flavors before a family trip to basketball practice, when we didn't have time to grab dinner.  They both liked them, but said they couldn't finish them.  They left half for later.  A great two-time snack option.

Peanut Butter Cups have long been a forbidden treat. What if you could eat them everyday and have them help you achieve your goals? With Quest Cravings high protein Peanut Butter Cups you can!

Made with just a few simple ingredients and 20 grams of high quality protein, plus pure non-Dutch processed chocolate, no soy and no sugar, you can finally satisfy your sweet tooth - and accomplish your goals - by eating real, nutritious food that tastes like candy!

240 calories - 20 g protein - retails for $37.49 for a box of twelve (24 cups)

I enjoyed these, those the aren't similar in taste to the sweet Reeses Peanut Butter Cups you are use to.  The consistency is the same, but the PB isn't quite as sweet.  I could eat them before a workout.  But, my kids who are huge PB fans, couldn't down them before we went to the gym one night.  I enjoyed mine and have had a few packs here and there before workouts.  And they also satisfied my sweet tooth.  Though I will not give up Reeses PB cups.  They didn't fill me up the same way the bars did, but were a nice alternative to the bar variety.

Bondi Band Ponytail Hats Review & Giveaway

We all LOOOOOOVE Bondi Bands (HERE).  I have more than two dozen in a basket in my closet.  I wear those non-slip, non-drip headbands on every single run.  They are super eye-catching and functional.  I can't say enough about them.  I've turned many of my couch to 5K clients on to them.  Bondi Band fever is spreading!!

Make sure you use coupon code FIVE to get five Bondi Bands (headbands only) online for $25!!

Bondi Band asked me to review their Wicking Ponytail Hats (HERE).  In honor of my Ragnar Relay Team - the Panty Raiders - I received some fun pirate hats.  Cute, huh?!

Retailing at $18-20 online, these hats are really affordable.  Just like the Bondi Bands - They come in all sorts of colors, patternes and fun sayings.

They are made of the same wicking, non-drip, material and keep your head warm.  They even covered my ears.  I put my ponytail up with a hairtie and slid the ponytail easily through the hole in the back of the hat.  It was nice not having my hair itch me underneath the hat, and around my ears.  And, I no longer had the bunched up "growth" on the back of my head, like I do with other hats.

In the zone.

So, we joined a local gym recently, because we live right across the street.  I love having the ability to walk to the gym.  Extra activity for the kids; no minivan; no excuses.  Well, no excuses, except today - because there is a blizzard outside my door, the city is shut down and the gym announced yesterday that they are closed.

It has been pretty cool trying out some new activities and machines other than the treadmill.  It really has reinforced just how much I am doing the same movement over-and-over-and-over with all of the running that I do.  Running will always be a constant in my life.  But, I'm also enjoying mixing in other things, too.  I am also looking forward to trying out some classes.  We recently tried Family Boot Camp and the kids - especially Little Dude - loved the interactive family activities that were exercise.  But they thought they were just having fun and playing around with their family.  Little Dude was red-faced and dripping with sweat.  I can't wait to take the kids to Family Zumba after the New Year - what a riot that will be!

The gym has tvs everywhere.  The treadmills are fantastic and have all the bells and whistles.  They have tvs, with cable tv, built right into the machines.  There are additional tvs hanging above the machines, that you can tune into.  I find myself turning the tvs on and plugging in my headphones.  Thinking I will watch the tv and listen to my music.  However, In the ten or so trips I've made to the gym recently, I don't think I've ever actually watched a television program.  I focus on my music, my feet, my breathing and the statistics that the machine is constantly spitting out at me.  I'm in the zone.  I'm staring straight ahead of me, at a spot on the wall, staring down at youngsters in the gym, at the view outside.  I don't need the distraction of a television program.  That is the true realization that I have become a true runner over the past several years.

I've also been playing around with my playlists.  I usually run with upbeat hip-hop tunes over and over.  I try to add 1-2 new songs to my "workout mix" playlist every few weeks.  During our first visit to the gym, I had just cleaned off my ipod and cleaned up my playlists.  However, I forgot to sync my "workout playlist".  I ended up with the "sleepytime" mix instead.  Ooops!

For my next trip to the gym, I updated my "workout mix" and even threw in some less up-beat tunes for my new loved stair climber and rowing machine.  Here are some of my favorite new tunes.

Don't Stop the Party (feat. TJR) 3:26 Pitbull Global Warming (Deluxe Version)

SLS Tri Compression Socks Review & Giveaway

Facebook recently introduced me to SLS Tri (HERE) - or SLS3.  They market themselves as "intelligent race apparel".  They claim their gear will change the way you think about what to wear during training and competition.  It is designed to reduce muscle vibration, a major cause of muscle fatigue, improve the feedback between your body and your brain, increase accuracy and efficiency of your movement, and provide superior comfort and fit.

I LOVE compression socks!  I have several pairs and several colors.  Many of my clients see me at the first day of practice and just think I'm wearing retro knee-high socks for fun.  Well, that's part of it, but compression socks also make my legs feel awesome!  Not to mention, when they are paired with a pair of running shorts or a cute skirt, they cut the wind on your legs and make a cool spring or fall day very comfortable for a run.

I was sent a beautiful pair of Butterfly Compression Socks (HERE) in pink.  I wear a size 10 running shoe and was sent a size large sock.  These fit me perfectly.  They were snug, but not too tight, as I've experienced with some other brands.  They stayed up when I ran at the gym and on my twelve miler this past weekend.  They never had to be adjusted and didn't cut into my knees.

The Butterfly Compression socks retail online for $60, which is a bit pricey.  But, if you are familiar with compression socks - you will know that this is pretty comparable to other brands and their non-sale prices.  These socks are offered in hot pink and light blue.  i just wish they would offer some more colors!

It's been stated that these compression socks have boosted bloodflow by 34%!  This increases the oxygen being delivered to your leg muscles - and calves - and can increase your performance.  These work great for short and long workouts - keeping your legs fresh - even for the longest workouts.  They have even been known to reduce ankle and foot injuries, due to running.  Even after I dusted off my running shoes for a twelve miler recently, my lower legs felt fresh and were not sore the next day.  It was only my hip flexers that were sore from the long run.  I really think the SLS Tri Compression socks helped prevented post-run soreness in my shins and calves.

I have had my couch to 5K clients suffer from many common "newbie" injuries - compression socks worn during a few short workouts have ocassionally help fixed the problem.

TrailHeads Be Seen Pocket Hat Review & Giveaway

Last winter, I saw an assortment TrailHeads (HERE) winter hats on display at a local running store.  I saw the Be Seen Pocket Hats and thought they were a nifty idea for keeping runenrs warm, seen and organized.  Later, TrailHeads, offered me one of these bad boys.  Last winter was so mild and by the time I received the hat, I hadn't had enough time to test it out.  Well, we received some significant snowfall earlier this month and the temps dropped - and I was lucky enough to try this hat out on the road.

The Be Seen Pocket Hat is available in a few different color options.  I chose the black/silver combination (HERE).  I would love to have had it in a fun, bright color - but the basic black will go with everything.  The hat retails online for $26 and are made in the USA.  Hats are one size.  I have a big noggin and this hat fit my head fine.  It also covered my ears a bit.  There is even a two-layered earband for extra insulation.  Sometimes I have trouble wearing hats (fleece or otherwise) when I run, because my head itches.  This was not the case with this hat.  The hat is also runner-friendly, as it is made of moisture wicking 100% polyester micro fleece.  The zipper pouch is perfect for storing extra things you may need on your run (house key, money - anything not too bulky.  The zipper is reflective and stands up to even the darkest conditions during the dark winter months.  The flective tream circles the entire hat, for enhanced visibility.  Even though the hat is black - it is super visible.

I wore my hate and layered it with my standard Bondi Band underneath, for even extra insulation.  This hat will be a great piece of running gear to use when I'm training my couch to 5k running groups this winter.  With this, my reflective vest and blinky lights - we will be safe during our workouts.

Believe I Am Strong Tee Review & Giveaway

I believe I am a lot of things.  Strong, determined, devoted, passionate.  I came across this great website, Believe I Am (HERE) - that helps you display your feelings - or help give you an extra dose of motivation.  Wear who you are proudly!

I chose to review the pretty Believe I am Strong Scoop Neck Tee (HERE).  These shirts retail for $29.99 and come in a variety of sayings, styles and colors.  This shirt has a nice neckline and shoulder length.  The purple top, paired with hot pink accents is super girly.  You can wear this around town or to the gym.  It has a nice "believe" saying near the waist.  Perfect to wear with a running skirt, leggings or skinny jeans.  These tops are nice and long.  Other fun sayings include many - joy, relaxed, grateful, beautiful and many more.

I was told that they ran snug.  I am typically always a medium - but I opted to go up to a large, because I'm a bit curvy.  I appreciated the head's up - because the large fit me perfectly.

About the Believe I Am Tees:

When I don’t feel like I have control over a situation, and there are more variables than I think I can handle, I tell myself that I am Strong. This helps me believe I can handle whatever is thrown at me. Also, in a sport generally dominated by small women, it's easy to feel self-conscious about our bodies. When I catch myself feeling this way, I focus on the Strength my body size provides. This is our version of a Super-woman costume embodying Strength yet remaining feminine. Wear it when you need to feel strong, or buy it as a gift for a Super-Woman in your life.

Wear our super-soft, organic, and sustainably made "Superhero" costume and use it as a "cue" to remind yourself that "It's not how big you are, it's how big you play!" The tag on your shirt is another cue to place somewhere special. Shirt runs slightly small for its size.

Believe I Am also sells some fun training journals (HERE).  I chose not to review them, because I prefer to track online and most likely wouldn't make the most of these journals.  But, they may be perfect for you - check them out!  Great stocking stuffers!  Start fresh for 2013!!

Jenny Present 26.2 Mini Medal Review

Have you heard of Jenny Present (HERE)??  Jenny and I bonded via email at "single mom".  So happy to be working with JP and promoting her products, just in time for the holidays.  If you haven't heard of Jenny Present, here is a little bit about Jenny and her custom jewelry ......

Jenny Present has seen her share of hardships and instead of letting life knock her down she's taken it head-on, maintaining her positivity, grace, elegance and charm. As a confident single mother and owner of her own jewelry line, Jenny Present is making it her mission to show women that no obstacle is too large to overcome. With the proper mindset and support, any goal can be reached.

“My passion for jewelry dates back a couple decades. As a young girl, I routinely scoured my grandmother’s extensive jewelry collection. I would stand in front of the mirror trying on every piece of jewelry I could get my little hands around.

Through that passion, my entrepreneurial spirit, and an inspiring support system I was able to form my company. ”

Jenny has made a life for herself inspired by the strong women surrounding her and her beautiful son. The St. Louis native has created a line for every woman, with pieces that not only exude simplistic class, but also serve as daily inspirations to those wearing them. jp jewelry is on the rise, and with a face and spirit like Jenny's behind it, it's easy to understand.

“My collections are meant to inspire and empower the women that wear them. I truly love what I do and hope that translates through the designs I create.”

From delicate chains with unique charms to elegant earrings with subtle details, each piece allows a woman to express her own style and personality. Worn alone for a chic simple look or layered for a bolder statement, whatever the look, every woman can make jenny present jewelry their own.

JP creates some awesome running jewerly, called Mini Medals (HERE).  I received a silver 26.2 Mini Medal.  These are super dainty and light.  I love how they flutter on your neck or wrist.  I received the charm in a pretty cinch gift bag and could put the charm on just about anything.  What a nice way to honor your achievements and journey.

About Jenny Present Running Jewerly:

The early morning runs. The burning legs and worn out sneakers. The grueling training plans. And then a race day that’s just as challenging as (if not more than!) all the preparation was. It’s all worth it when you pass the finish line! For the new runner who finished her first 5K or the woman who just ran a marathon, jenny present jewelry is a unique way to celebrate those amazing accomplishments.
As a half-marathon runner herself, jewelry designer jenny present knows how great it feels to receive a race finisher medal—you never want to take it off! That’s the inspiration for the jenny present Mini Medal™, wearable necklaces that stylishly celebrate running triumphs. These carefully crafted necklaces for runners can be personalized with the date and location of completed races, a few motivational words, or “13.1” or “26.2” to represent the number of miles ran. For every running triumph after the first big one, customize another hand stamped mini running medal to add to your necklace. It’s well earned!

JP also offers the Proud Mama Collection (HERE).  They offer some really unique, customizable gifts for the holidays.  Make sure you bookmark JP for Mother's Day or mom's birthday next year.  She will be ecstatic when opening one of these lovely pieces.  With customizable initials, names and charms - you can specify exactly what suits your family and your mom's taste.

I placed my 26.2 Mini Medal on a silver bangle bracelet.  I can wear it alone or layered with others, for a really fun look.  I can sport my marathon achievements, even when I'm dressed up for work or going out.  I can also easily take off the Mini Medal if I want to place it on a necklace or other bracelet.

Sun Prairie Fall 2012 Couch to 5K Race Report: Jingle Bell Run 2012

During the first week of October, I met sixteen ladies to start on their 5K journey.  Some had ran in high school, same had run a 5K or two in the past - but most had never ran.

Fast forward nine weeks - and 18 group runs - and 13 or the 16 ladies have finished the program.  With their sites on the Jingle Bell Run 5K in Madison on December 8, we ran all of the program in the dark and then the cold.  We even ran the course together in the week leading up to the race.  We had our pasta dinner and final run together on Thursday evening.  Thank you, Market Street Diner, for the tasty pasta dinner and cake.  And the group even surprised me with this thoughtful card and awesome gifts.  I finally have my own Running Diva Mom Bondi Band.  Can't wait to wear it!

The race didn't start until 10:30, near the Henry Vilas Zoo.  I carpooled with Jolene to the race.  I thought we would have to park far away.  But, the crowd wasn't as large as I imagined - there was parking everywhere.  Oh well, Jolene and I got a little warm-up walk in.  We met up with the rest of the group at 10:00 and talked race strategy, took some photos - we really worked the camera.  After a long line at the port-a-potty - we were OFF - just ten minutes after the 10K started.

The path behind Edgewood College was extremely congested.  There were tons of kids that were dodging all of the other runners; nearly tripping them.  Then we braced ourselves for the huge hill in front of us.  It was helpful that they already ran the course and knew that there was one large hill during the first mile and another at the end.

I ran back and forth during whole race - between all thirteen runners.  Some struggled, some didn't.  I gave them the same pep talk that I gave them during the past nine weeks.  Run your race.  Run your pace. Don't try and keep up with everyone else.  Just do your thing.  Listen to your breathing and your feet will follow.  And most importantly - Enjoy yourself.

Everyone finished between 30-45 - just as expected.  There were lots of smiles and laughs all around.  This was such a fun group to train with.  I hope that they all keep in touch and keep up with the running - because many of them secretly enjoyed the punishment.  Just look at these beaming smiles! ....

Congratulations ...

Kona Kase Review

A couple of months ago, I received this cool, orange box at my front door.  It is a Kona Kase (HERE).  Kona Kase's ship on the 15th of every month for a $15 monthly membership fee.  Each month you receive a different assortment of goodies for your training - energy bars, energy gels, sports drinks- you name it.

I received a variety of items in my Kona Kase.  Some I had tried before and some I had not.  I liked them all, except I wasn't a fan of FRS drinks before - so I didn't even try those.  I think it would be fun to get an assortment of different things every month - you never know what you may enjoy.  But, like me - there may be a thing or two that you won't like at all.  I guess you could donate them to your running buddies or use them as stocking stuffers for your endurance athlete friends.  Just like your kids, though, it's good to try something new.

Check out Kona Kase (HERE) and on Facebook (HERE).  Check back on RDM in a couple of months for a fun giveaway - perfect - just in time for you to hit your training hard again in the spring!
