Long Run Mind Games

It has been almost two weeks since my marathon and my longest run has been six miles. I decided I wanted to get a longish run in this weekend and hoped to log a twelve miler. Hubby headed out for nine miles this morning. Forecast calls for rain this afternoon. I decided that I should try and head out as soon as he returned. When I headed out the door, I decided that I was just going to do nine miles and started my stop watch. Just me and a bag of Sports Beans.

Around mile three I was already feeling famished and weak. What the heck was my problem?! I just ran 26 miles two weeks ago?! I took a few Sports Beans and figured I'd at least try to get six miles in. I got to mile six and decided I would do another three and finish at nine. When I got to nine, I decided to head home and finish out at ten. As I headed home (about 1/4 mile from home) I realized that I still had something in me and headed back out for two more miles. I ended up doing all twelve miles that I initially had on my agenda. I felt accomplished and happy that I did. I don't think I would've been too happy if I would've cut the run short.

What the heck is it with the mind games we play with ourselves during long runs?!

  1. Awesome job on your run. I know I have days where I struggle to get past 2 and then feel awesome afterwards when I pushed through and did more.

  2. I'd say you won the mind game today, way to stick with it! I play at mind games all the time. I win some and lose some. I don't think I have found the winning pattern yet, but I'm still working on it! Thanks for stopping by my blog. I always appreciate new readers and comments!! Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

  10. after my marathon I was amazed that I could run 26 miles because on my long runs of 6-12, I had nothing. It was like it was done in a previous life or by someone else.

  11. Way to go getting all your miles in. It can be tough sometimes. I can usually trick myself in to doing all my miles if I choose and out and back run. As long as I go half way I know that I'm going to have to go the other half to get home ;).

I also think you did amazing to do 12 miles only two weeks out from a full marathon. That's pretty impressive.

  17. I do the same thing. The other day I had a 10-miler and at the beginning of the run, I had convinced myself that I would be so happy if I could just get 6 miles in. I kept making deals with myself to just go another half mile. It wasn't until 9 1/4 miles that I knew I would get the entire 10 miles in.
