Running Diva Mom is Taking a Break

After some disappointing circumstances, strain on time, stress and emotions ... I will be taking an unplanned break from this blog. I will be taking the time I need to focus on making the world right again.

It may take weeks, maybe months. But, I will be back sometime in early-2011. I hope it won't take long. I promise to be back with tons of fun race reports, blog meet-ups, kid stories, and many fantastic product reviews and giveaways (I apologize to all of my wonderful sponsors waiting in the wings).

At this difficult time, I will turn to many of the fantastic running and mommy blogs out there (many of you!) for inspiration and enjoyment. I will continue to use my running to push me through my emotions, keep some sense of routine and keep me grounded.

Have a fantastic holiday season and thanks for following my journey!

Christmas Stocking from The Leopard Print Monkey Review & Giveaway

Take one look at my blog ... or my closet ... or Little Diva's wordrobe and you can tell that I have been obsessed with animal prints for quite some time. Little Diva's nursery was even animal print (tastefully done, if I might mention that!). I love leopard print and zebra print. Everyone knows it.

This fall, I came across this awesome website, The Leopard Print Monkey (HERE). I love that you can shop by product, print or even animal! It's insane for an animal print lover like me!!! Leopard and zebra prints for the animal print lover (me!). Take a safari through the jungle of their wild products for gift giving, your personal collection, home decor, and party supplies. They sell everything from office supplies to shower curtains to salt and pepper shakers to clothes to puzzles to greeting cards.

A big part of our holiday gift-giving is stockings. I love watching the kids open all of their gifts and then and added sense of excitement when we realize that we STILL HAVE STOCKINGS TO OPEN!!!! YEAH! More fun and surprises for everyone. Little Dude and Little Diva obviously get stockings from Santa. But a few years back, after Hubby and I decided that we didn't NEED anything (especially big items), we decided to set a dollar limit and just do stockings for eachother. It has been one of my favorite traditions. It's fun to see the thought we've both put into small items that we both will love (candies and treats, books, movies, unique running finds, kitchen gadgets, office supplies).

My stocking wasn't necessarily as fabulous as I wanted it to be. I was happy to see that The Leopard Print Monkey had TONS AND TONS of animal print stockings that reflected my personality!! Just look at this ....

I love that all four of us now have a stocking that represents our personalities. I will love seeing them all hang next to eachother over this holiday season. This stocking is large, well made and completely adorable. I can't wait to see what hubby fills it up with on Christmas morning ... stay tuned!!!

I came across Ella’s Kitchen (HERE) a few months back. Eleven year old Ella and her dad, Paul, set up Ella’s Kitchen for her generation. · pack 'o' snacks

Little Diva is almost 7 and Little Dude is almost 3. They both are pretty picky when it comes to taste and texture. We tried four different Ella’s Kitchen flavors. These were great for popping in a diaper bag or a cooler. I tend to pack a small cooler when we’re out-and-about and these worked great. I used them once when going to the park for the afternoon and another day when we were picking Little Diva up from school. When the weather was nice, Little Dude and I would walk down to school to pick her up and I would pack an after-school snack. These were a nice HEALTHY treat option. Pair it with some fresh fruit or a piece of string cheese and we were good-to-go. No refrigeration necessary. It was easy to store and transport. No utensils necessary either. Both kids liked them, but Little Diva seemed to only like the sweeter (fruity) flavors better. She loved the smoothie the most. Little Dude liked that these were squeezable (like Gogurts) and sucked his right down. He liked squeezing them so much that he squeezed his all over (until he mastered it) and messed up his shirt.

Endurance & Outdoor Sports Apparel & Gifts

Yes ... I am DONE with my holiday shopping. I know, it's sick. And, I've taken today off to wrap all of my gifts. I want it done.

Really, I have no other choice. Little Diva and Little Dude BOTH have December birthdays (her-five days before Christmas; him-five days after!!!!) Believe it. Poor planning on MY part!! Even though they get totally spoiled by everyone during the entire month of December, I don't like to slight them the least bit either. I wrap their Christmas gifts in holiday wrapping paper and I wrap their birthday gifts in colorful, birthday paper. I try to wrap them all in paper, to increase the fun and excitement. Man, do I have my work cut-out for me today.

Little Diva is the little "Budding Artist". She comes up with her OWN oragami creations and decoupages items, and amazes us every single time. She depletes my printer paper supply. She goes through spools of tape like it's sticky choclolate, while working on her projects. And, she also loves school, reading, learning and discovering why things do the things they do. I have loaded her up with tons of cheap, fun projects, doodle pads, activity books, board games, chapter books and other things to keep that girl's mind busy!

Little Dude is "Mr. Fix It". He is into pushing buttons (playing and otherwise!!) and putting things together and taking them apart. He also loves helping me around the house (Yes, this boy loves cleaning!). This two year old can put a 48 piece puzzle together over and over ... and over again. He's also a huge Diego and Dora fan right now. I have loaded him up with a toy vaccuum, tons and tons of puzzles from the Dollar Store, PlayDough Sets and several Dora and Diego Lego sets.

Sooooo ..... I will be wrapping this all this morning and hiding it away until all of the fifty-million festivities start at the end of the month. Then, they will open it all back up and I will be opening toy packaging and twisty ties for two months! I will be anxiously anticipating garbage/recycling day every week to get rid of more and more of the packaging and boxes!

I know, you're not done with your holiday shopping yet?! I wanted to introduce you to the Endurance & Outdoor Sports Apparel & Gifts Store (HERE) that Hubby and I created over at Cafe Press a couple of years ago.

Are you already thinking about the 2011 racing season?! I am. The kids will love these race support crew tees and onesies. Help them support mommy and daddy while they are spectating.

Do you have a spouse that runs or races?! A special triathlete on your shopping list?! We have several unique racing stickers for your vehicle (great stocking stuffers). We sell several VERY nicely-matted, motivational prints for hanging up in your home or gym. We have one hanging up in ours, too. While you are out shopping for others, your shopping trip would be complete without picking up something special for YOURSELF!!

Honestly, I have soooooo many ideas for shirts and tees that I would like to create, and will be developing many more over the winter months as my schedule allows. But, I just don't have the time right now. I will be updating you as new items are posted on the site.
Happy Shopping!!

Vintage Retro Shorts Product Review & Giveaway

As a fashionable mom of two, I love to be cute and comfortable at the same time. I love to bum around the house and around town in fun tees and sweatshirts with some serious bling and bright designs. Pair them with a pair of jeans in the winter or shorts or gauchos in the summer, and I’m ready to go. I tend to run around the house in a fun tee and cotton shorts. But, I tend to over-heat and want something that is no-fuss as I clean up the house or play around with the kids. But, it has to be cute! Fashionable … and comfortable. That’s me.

Earlier this summer, I came across Vintage Retro Shorts (HERE). These shorts are SUPER comfortable 100% cotton retro shorts. And, they come in awesome color combinations. Bright pink, blue, green and more. Mix and match for some fun color-combinations. Pair them with a pair of flip flops or knee high socks and sneakers and you will be sure to make statement.
The shorts are available in sizes XS-Large. I typically wear a medium and had to go up a size in these. They don’t currently sell shorts for girls, but Little Diva (almost 7 yrs) was able to wear a size womens XS comfortably.

I would not wear these to work out in during long runs (think 100% cotton), but they are fun for lounging and going on walks. At only $12/pair they are a great investment in your lounging wordrobe.

Miles for November

November was an uneventful month race-wise. But, a big month personally, related to goals. I pounded out all of my miles on my new treadmill and loved every moment. I completed a half marathon on my treadmill, as well as a nine mile run on the treadmill while home alone with both kiddos. I have surpassed my goal of running 1,400 miles for the year and am on to my next goal of 1,600 miles. I gradually increased my mileage again this month as well as incorporating longer "cool downs" after my runs and playing with the incline on the treadmill as I recover. I'm already seeing a difference in my pants and how my clothes fit. And, I'm happy to report that I've lost all eight pounds I gained after my marathon in early-October (more on that soon).

November: 116.1
October: 105.9
September: 132.1
August: 158.9
July: 150.5
June: 101.8
May: 163.9
April: 145.2
March: 115.9
February: 116.7
January: 132.5

Total for 2010: 1,439.4

Miles 'til 1,400 mileage goal: ZERO!

2 Long Runs in November: 13.1 miles, 9 miles (all on the treadmill)

Somnio Running Shoes Product Review & Giveaway

I have worn Brooks running shoes for five years and have suffered from bunions (from my running and from my dress shoes and high heels at the office). Though my shoes had carried me through thousands of miles, my feet hurt terribly (especially the bunion on my right foot), my bunions ached and I decided to see if a small change could make a difference. I decided to donate several pairs of highly-uncomfortable high heels (though kept my favorites that I could still wear semi-comfortably). And, I wanted to see if a new pair of running shoes would help me even further.

I came across Somnio (HERE) online. Somnio is Latin for “dream.” Their mission is to help people achieve their lifestyle goals and do so while remaining injury and pain free. They claim that they aren’t just selling shoes; they’re solving problems, and are helping to make some dreams come true along the way. Somnio is founded on the principle that shoes should adapt to the individual and improve biomechanics. Every person is different, and they believe that every pair of shoes should be different, too, so they built a platform for making that possible. Their exclusive system of almost infinite shoes and limitless possibilities was designed in the nation’s leading sports medicine lab, and then tested and refined on “real runners”. Their adjustable component system is superior to every running and casual shoe currently on the market. They believe focus provides a clear path to achievement. They are focused on making great shoes that accommodate to every individual's needs.

They are focused on building the perfect Somnio shoe for you. And, that’s exactly what they did for me!!

The approach of Somnio’s design (as taken from their website):
Somnio’s design is embedded in the concept of alignment control and force distribution. To achieve this level of customization, Somnio utilizes a “direct” vs. “indirect” approach. Old convention achieves alignment control (in this case pronation control) through firmer medial mid-sole materials to “block” motion from happening (“indirect”). It does not address the actual alignment of the foot/ankle itself. When the same durometer (cushioning) is used across all weight categories, it can create a stiff/unnatural feeling for some runners. Somnio’s “direct” approach toward alignment control incorporates both the extrinsic and intrinsic design concepts utilized in orthotic prescription. Extrinsic posting in an orthotic changes the angulation of the foot/ankle while intrinsic posting supports the structural alignment of the foot and can be made to improve the foot/ankle alignment.

Last shape and medial mid-sole durometer options are offered in all Somnio models upon which further customization occurs. Somnio uses the different last/durometer options to accommodate for foot shape and weight categories.

Somnio achieves improved force distribution through improved alignment and customization of the cushioning inserts at the postero-lateral heel and across the metatarsal-phalangeal joints (balls of the feet). While old convention relies on numerous shoe models that try to predict the various combinations of firmness/softness that someone will like, the intangible “feel” of a shoe is a very personal experience and can be customized throughout the Somnio footwear line.

There are six shoes for men and six running models for women, ranging in price from $70 (on sale on the Somnio website) to $160.

I was asked to go get my “prescription” at a local running store. A prescription?!?! I had no clue what kind of fitting they had in store for me. The wonderful folks at Berkeley Running Company (HERE) in Madison helped me get fitted. WOW – what an amazing process! In the past I had just been asked by local running stores to run on the treadmill or to take a quick jaunt around the parking lot. I was simply asked if it was comfortable or not (How do you really know?!?!?). Or, I’d simply stop in and pick up another pair of the exact same shoe I was already using (typically the case). Well, not that day!! I was asked to use the patented Line-Up device and do a variety of activities to get fitted properly while barefoot. A model was then chosen for me and we played around with various cushions until I got what I thought was the right fit for me. They analyzed me as I ran on the treadmill and I tried out the shoes. I could still feel the pain and rubbing on the bunion on my right foot and we adjusted the cushioning accordingly. I ran on the treadmill again and immediately felt a difference. My foot felt completely different as I ran on the treadmill and there was no pressure on my bunion. It was amazing. It even made the impact on my right ankle seem lighter.

The Somnio fit process works in 5 easy steps:
The individual stands on our patented Line-Up device. (pictured above)
The fitter adjusts the varus until the knee is aligned.
The fitter uses the arch ball to select the correct footbed.
The fitter uses the chart to select the correct Ind-X inserts.
Then, the fitter slides the F.E.A.T system into the shoe for the individual to try.

BEYOND SHOE SIZE AND PRONATION: HOW TO TRULY CUSTOMIZE A SHOE.
The Line Up Measuring Device is our patented fitting tool.
The biomechanic design is a result of our partnership with the Boulder Center for Sports Medicine. While the individual stands barefoot upon the Line Up Device, the fitter uses the adjustable slides to easily determine:
Which footbed fits their arch
Which cushion is appropriate for their weight and running surface
Which varus wedge inserts best align the foot and lower leg

Step 1: Line Up Device
Standing barefoot alignment assessment:
The shoe fitter measures arch height (Low, Normal, High) and pronation (Neutral, Mild, Moderate, Significant).
Supinators should chose a neutral model shoe to encourage any pronation.
Cushioning is selected based on body weight.

The individual does a single leg squat on the Line Up Device:
The individual places their heel against the heel cup. This allows the inherent tibial torsion of the lower leg (degree varies between people) to place the foot naturally vs. forcing the foot straight forward and imposing an internal rotation of the knee/femur.
Fitter lines up laser on middle of patella.
The individual perform a single leg squat (1/3 knee bend) while looking straight forward.
The individual performs a few repetitions of the squat so the fitter can assess typical running patterns.

Step 2: Adjust Varus
The fitter adjusts the varus using our patented Line Up Device.
The fitter adjusts the balance of the Line Up Device to optimize the alignment of the laser tracking on your patella.

Step 3: Use Arch Ball
In this step the fitter will select your ideal arch height based on:
Archometer.
General visual assessment of arch height (Low, Normal, High).
Historical tolerance of arch support (this is determined during your initial questioning).

Step 4: Select Components
The fitter will use the Durometer Gauge, your general weight and the varus setting to select your correct inserts.
Durometer will initially be based on body weight or injury needs and then be adjusted to accommodate for fit.

Step 5: Shoe Trial
Place the Functionally Engineered Adaptable Tricomponent [FEAT] System into the shoe.
The fitter will use their biomechanical knowledge to make specific adjustments to get the best shoe fit. Any necessary adjustments are based on how the shoe actually fits and feels.

Modifications:
The shoe fitter’s first priority is addressing any alignment needs with appropriate canting changes.
They will modify durometer of inserts to provide a good balance between comfort/feel and injury needs.
Arch height is typically a straight forward decision.

Here is the Somnio prescription that I was given:
Model: Womens Exact Change (I knew that I would need a stability shoe)
http://www.somniorunning.com/womens-exact-change
Women's Size 10 (my usual size)
This shoe provides stability. With a slightly curved last, it’s best suited for runners with medium to high arches and moderate pronation.

F.E.A.T.SYSTEM Functionally Engineered Adaptable Tricomponent SystemInterchangeable footbeds for a custom fit based on the runner’s arch height, providing more support and comfortIndX cushioning inserts for long-lasting cushioning and customization based on weight and preferred running surfaceTunable Varus angulation for addressing each runner’s particular biomechanical needs – like having a custom orthotic made specifically for your shoe2 Step dual density midsole for pronation controlRoll Bar midfoot bridge provides extra support and gait alignment during the transition from heel to forefootRoad Block tread rubber compound for durabilityStretch Mesh forefoot material allows the shoe to move with the foot and accomm dates a wide variety of foot typesLace Keeper keeps laces in place and tied

Neon Yellow Cushion front and back (Variable Cushioning (inner front and outer back) is based on the runner’s weight and preferred running surface.)

Varas Wedge - right foot is red; left foot is blue (Adjustable Varus Wedge inserts (three sizes) for biomechanical fine-tuning.)Provides correction of subtalar joint alignment (direct pronation control). Full foot varus wedges are utilized to provide better functional alignment control throughout stance phase (forefoot control is particularly needed during mid-to-late stance).
Footbed - right foot is green ++; left foot is green ++ ( Customizable Footbeds (three sizes) to match arch height and shape of foot.)Provides improved alignment control by more adequately supporting the arch structures (aids in “intrinsic control” of subtalar joint alignment. Increased comfort (allows for accommodation to both the high and low ends of the arch height spectrum).

Footbed packages (HERE) retail for $40 on the Somnio website. They also had these for sale at the running store.

Running Diva Mom’s Experience with Somnio Running Shoes:

Fitting day was like a "spa day" at the running store. The fitting took about one hour of pampering (the store was kind of busy, too) with my professional fitter and I left with my “prescription” to email to Somnio. I received my shoes about one week later and have been using them for the past month (all on the treadmill). I was even able to pound out that half marathon the treadmill last weekend. Since my right foot and left foot had slightly different prescriptions, I did feel a little difference in my shoes when I first put them on, and even during the first mile of my runs. In the right foot, the cusion felt similar to when my sock is bunched up under my foot. Kind of annoying at first. But, that went away as I got about a mile in and got comfortable with my shoes. Very comfortable. I also noticed that the shoes seemed “chunkier” and not as “slender” as my Brooks (not that my Brooks were a sleek design either). Appearance-wise, they seemed less feminine (less sleek/slender) and I certainly wish that they had some girly color options (think pink!). But, outside of my annoying personal color preferences, the performance on these babies was great. The toe box seemed a lot wider. My toes seemed to move better and more freely and they didn’t fall asleep like they do sometimes when I’m running at longer distances. I did get a blood blister under my longest toenail (like I usually do in my Brooks on long runs). I’m not sure if this was the shoes, just my annoying feet, the fact that my nail may have been too long at the time, or if my toe simply couldn’t stand the same exact pounding/wear on the treadmill time after time after time (versus being outside on the road and having some variety). So, the fit was great. My bunions didn’t hurt (even after that 13 mile run on the treadmill). And, my feet still don’t ache about 100 miles later. I am absolutely, completely amazed about that fact! One downfall is the suggested retail price for these shoes and the fact that you also have to purchase the cushions as they wear down. An added expense. Running is already an expensive hobby (despite what non-runners may think!). But, based on my personal experience and what they’ve done to make my feet happy again – I think they are a great investment! What a difference. I suppose that I could justify the splurge by taking the money that I spent at a discount department store (on a couple of pairs of cheap shoes every few months) and apply that to these babies?! I would totally recommend these shoes to anyone that has problems with their feet or just wants to try something new. The fitting experience, alone, was enough to make me more informed and make me appreciate what my feet (and my body) are actually doing for me.

Oh yeah, my Somnios came in this awesome box! I thought it was pretty cool. Apparently, the kids did, too! They love altering boxes and making projects. This was a fun (and messy) project for all of us.

Lift Your Sole Stocking Stuffers Product Review & Giveaway

Earlier this year I had the wonderful opportunity to work with the fabulous Jill from Lift Your Sole (HERE) on a review and giveaway. I loved (and still do!) the cuff bracelet I received. Jill followed up with me this fall to see if I'd like to do another giveaway for all of my fabulous readers. With the holidays right around the corner, we decided to offer you an assortment of great stocking stuffers. Who wouldn't want all of these uniquely adorable running finds in their stocking?!

You may have heard about Lift Your Sole and unique running jewelry is the first thing that comes to mind. Yes, Jill sells some awesome pieces with fun sayings and slogans that you'll relate to. But, she also sells some really unique items such as cinch bags, magnets, travel mugs, soda koozies, keychains, headbands, and more .... all with a theme for endurance athletes ... and many geared towards moms!!

I love that the color combinations are fun ... and totally me. I love the polka dots, animal prints, pink/black and blue/brown and pink/brown color combinations. Everything is bright and motivating. What a way to express yourself!!

The soda koozie was a fun way to sport my Diet Mountain Dew. How cute is it?!?!

The bottlecap magnets are so adorable. Lift Your Sole sells so many fun sayings for runners, endurance athletes and moms. What a fun way to keep you organized on the refrigerator or message board at home or in your cubicle at work. At only $3 a piece, they are great stocking stuffers!

The skinny headbands are also only $3 and are fantastic. These always look great with pony tails and I wasn't sure how they would work with my shorter hairstyle. They are so cute and fun. I'm not sue I'd wear this for a long distance event, but it is fun to sport for a short treadmill run.
The 26.2 magnet works great on the Marathon Mommy Minivan and on the refrigerator. Express yourself when you're running the kids around town or sport it in your home with your training schedule. At $6 each, they are a cute accessory for your vehicle (and removable, unlike car decals). They are heavy-duty and stay-put. I love the polka dots and the color combination!

I think that the zebra print travel mug is my favorite item of all. I (heart) coffee way too much these days and how better to take your cup of java from home to the gym or early morning on your way into work. I saw these at the Disney Princess Half Marathon Expo earlier this year .... and fell in love. At $16 these babies are affordable and fun. They come embroidered in the Run, 13.1 and 26.2 designs. And, they are spill-proof ... great for carrying a purse, two grocery bags, a carton of milk, and a little one in your arms!! I also love that all of the pieces are removable. This mama doesn't like to handwash and I love the fact that I can put everything safely in the dishwasher!

Embrace Each Step Necklace Product Review & Giveaway

I recently received one of the new Girlie Necklaces (HERE) from Embrace Each Step (HERE). Lori rocks and has been a gem to work with!! It's no doubt that you will find fabulous customer service with her!

The Girlie necklaces are a steal at only $20 (no chain) and are great gifts for the holidays and nice stocking stuffers. You can purchase the necklace with the ball chain for $35.

I received the Runner Girlie necklace. But, Lori also sells so many other Girlies aimed at other sports and activies: yoga, dance, volleyball, soccer, swimming and biking! Don't see a sport you want?! Send her a note and suggest that she adds a new Girlie to her line.

The necklace is so simple ... and light. I could even wear it running if I wanted to (I don't typically wear jewelry when running). It's so delicate and fun.

Lori hand stamps, files and polishes every charm and pendant!!! WOW! Check out her hand-stamped jewelry section (HERE) for some other great pieces including items for running and triathlon.

THE RUN IS YOURS. EMBRACE EACH STEP.
