Treadmill Pace -- How Fast?

I'm curious just how fast others are pushing themselves on the treadmill? When I first started running a few years back, I was only running at 6.0 MPH. Overtime, I've sped things up a bit. I always start at 6.6 MPH and work my way up to "sprinting" at around 7.5 - 8.0 MPH the last 1/2 mile (regardless of the distance). I end up running a 5K in about 27-something minutes. But, my recent 5K PR is 24:46.

I don't do an incline and I don't change my "terrain". I feel like I push myself so much harder on the treadmill, than I do outside though. But, I feel like I'm flying on that thing.

I'm curious, how fast you're running on the treadmill?

  1. Every once in a while I'll do the Dreadmill. The main thing I have learned and heard is to always use between 1/2 to 1 % incline the entire time I'm on it. It's suppposed to best simulate how the foot strikes on outside pavement.

I have to mix it up on the tread. Here is a fun little tempo run that I do lot's of the time. I'll do a 1/2 mile warm-up, then begin increasing MPH by .1 every tenth of a mile. I'll do this for up for a mile or two, then hold for a 1/4 mile, then decrease .1 every tenth of a mile, until I'm back to where I started.

I almost always use it as a tempo run, because it's makes me run the pace that I'm trying to reach.

  2. If I'm just running an easy run, I'll set the incline at 1% and the speed at 6mph. That feels a little harder/faster than a 10 min/mi run outside so I wonder if my TM isn't set quite right, though.

    Have a great weekend!

  3. I ever tried on treadmill 15 mph, and I couldn't hold for 1 min. Usually I do 3mph for warm up in 3min then do 6 mph for 5 min at 1% incline and stay at 8 mile in 0 incline for another 5 min, and repeat the circulation. It really good routine.

  4. I do intervals with 6.4 mph at 2.5 incline and increase to 8.3 with 4 in incline. I push myself slowly week by week, went from 7 to 8.4 in just over a month, pretty proud of that. Good music helps alot. Plus i concentrate on proper breathing and use my arms more when running.
