I was looking through old pictures on our computer and realized how much different our lives are now from before we had kids (obviously, right?!). But, we didn't do an ounce of exercise .... at all. I was a big scrapbooker and he was a "computer geek" and we had separate offices in our condo and each had our own computer and desks and would spend our evenings sitting there (in separate rooms0 doing computer work, surfing the internet and craft projects ... separately. My mom use to tell me, "It's such a nice day, why don't you get outside". And I use to think she was so lame about it.
But now, I look back and think about all the time I wasted just sitting there doing nothing essentially. Now we have two beautiful kids (that are a complete handful, but fun!) and we are so active now and are able to somehow fit it all in. It still continues to amaze me.

As I've mentioned before, running has given us a common interest and some common goals ... and something to talk about. Maybe that's why this is the first 'workout routine' that I've ever stuck to, because we are in this together. Not to say, we don't have tiffs about who is working out when sometimes!! We MAKE TIME for our workouts and our races and incorporate the entire family in our new lifestyle ... THAT I LOVE!!!
Hubby may kill me for posting these, but it's amazing to see how our transformations have taken place. He even became an Ironman last year!!!

So, I ask you .... when did your running journey begin? Did you do it to lose weight? Baby weight? Did you set a goal to run a 5K ... or even a marathon? Does your spouse support you on your journey ... are they as crazy as you are about running?? I would love to hear from you.
My hubby is very supportive of my running. He knows it's my outlet and that he benefits by having a happy, healthy and hot wife! He has been a casual runner for a while, doing 5Ks here and there. But he is currently training for his first half in May. I am so excited for him. Not sure we will ever train together, I am WAY faster than him. I love that he gets it!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great post!! I am going to have to borrow this idea and post some old pictures. My hubby and I have always liked the gym, but we do a lot more outside now we have kids. He has just started getting into running, so it should be interesting!

ReplyDeleteI started a few years ago. My best friend signed me up for a 5k! yikes! So, it started then. My hubby is VERY supportive and even runs with me. We've ran a few races together and we workout together thru the week. I love having him by my side!

ReplyDeleteMy hubbs injuried his knee and had surgery this past April. Since then he has not been running (aside from what the Army MAKES him done for PT tests). He never LOVED running like I do. He did not do distance running at all. I wish he shared my passion. I wish he supported it more eagerly (although he likes the effects it has on my body!! and benefits have the effect on the mind!) His lack luster support may change over time just as his ability to run did. I will keep praying that is the case and be happy that he supports and encourages me as much as he does.
Those are such sweet pictures! I started running... I don't know why. I think to fill a void in my life when I decided I wasn't going to play music seriously anymore. That was in... 2001... wow! time flies. My husband is not a runner, but he is into weight lifting so he "gets" the need to exercise. He doesn't come to every race, but he's been there for the important ones, and he's always happy for me when I do well. I'm very lucky!
ReplyDeleteSuch a healthy looking family! Both my husband and I run. With three kids it takes a lot of cooperation on both our parts. We have gone through periods of not running and we are always better during our running periods, which we are hoping doesn't end this time.
ReplyDeleteMy husband joins me at a race once or twice a year. No other running or preparation. He just runs a couple of races! But he is very supportive of my time and training.
ReplyDeleteI love your post - and those pictures and fun. You guys both looks great! My husband is not supportive of my running and it becomes kind of a fight to get runs in sometimes. Oh well.
ReplyDeleteI love the latest picture of you guys-so cute! My husband doesn't run much at all. He thinks I'm crazy, but he is supportive of it because he knows I enjoy it. I'm running my first half marathon in a few months only about a mile from where we live. Hopefully he will come at least to see the finish. I know if he would get started he'd love it, it's just hard to convince someone who always saw running as a punishment that they should do it for fun!

ReplyDeletethe bf and i run sometimes. he is not a big runner. he did 1 race with me last year and will do 1 race with me this year. in the summer, when we go to the cottage, we always run together (he doesnt want me to get eaten by a bear....but like what can he do if we see a bear....fight it??? hahahha)
but we do go for lots of walks together in the spring, summer and fall month.

Lovely pictures! I started running after seeing pictures of myself still with baby weight 5 years after my youngest was born. So I returned to running. The races started only as a motivator to keep running. Although my hubby doesn't run, he totally supports me and I couldn't do it without him.
ReplyDeleteI started running a few years ago and at the time my wife was a smoker. She eventually tried running on her own, quit smoking and after a year and a half of running with me, we are training for our first marathon together. We do most of our longer weekend runs together.

ReplyDeleteMy husband and I were often active together, but never running. After I'd been running for a while I started to ang at him to join me on a specific trail. I knew he'd love it. He resisted for a long time because he is VERY busy. But eventually I got him to come along. He loved the trail but was shocked to see how hard it was on him. He's always been faster than me, but after that first run he was in a ton of pain for about a week, while I was totally fine the next day. That was the kick off to get him running more often. He does every race with me now and tries to train with me at least once a week. He rarely runs on his own though.
Great post. Nice to see the pics along the years. You're doing a world of good for your kids too by chaning your lifestyles.

ReplyDeleteHe supports me in my running but didn't think it would be something I could do, he actually has been surprised by my commitment to running and how well I've done.
I'm hoping that my hubby will join me in my running adventure and we can enjoy this journey together.

My boyfriend supports me yes, but hasn't yet joined me. He does his own thing, football, hockey, and has mentioned maybe doing a duathlon this year, but not sure how serious he is. HAHA. Awesome that your hubby became Ironman! How fantastic! Love the pics.
ReplyDeleteWow! You have made amazing progress the past ten years - I loved your decade in review post, too. (You've got me thinking about doing one for myself!) If anything, I wish I would have started my journey a few years earlier, and been a more active mommy when my boys were small.
ReplyDeleteYo are so right! Before we had our boys we did not run. I started to lose the baby fat :) And have not stopped I run half marathons, typically,and my hubs and boys are always at mile 6 and 13 cheering me on :) Love your picture journey. I love happy families!
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I, too , was inactive before kids but got the fitness bug after my 2nd child was born. I ran my 1st half marathon in 2005 and will run my second of many more next weekend. Husband is super supportive and encourages me constantly.

I was very active but never ran, till I signed up for a 5k with some co-workers and then had to start. I never thought I could run then I fell in love with it and the rest his history : )
ReplyDeleteMy Husband use to run a lot more, but now won’t do anything more than a 5k. He is very supportive of me though and lets me run to my heart’s content.
My hubby supports me but HATES running. But, he goes to all my races and is there at the end (usually with the kids) to give me a big hug. The best was seeing him after the chicago marathon!

I thank God every day for a husband who inspires me to be fit and healthy. Sounds like you got a good one, too!

ReplyDeleteI found running by accident. I started walking with my dogs (puppies at the time) as they got stronger and I got stronger as I joke I started running a few short lengths here and there. Then it became a challenge and all of sudden I was running further and further. I never kept track of how far I was going.
Then I came back from a vacation (at my lowest weight in a very long time) and I needed to keep going. I signed up for my first 5K and I didn't even know if I could run that far. I fell three days before the race, but I still ran the race.
I fell in run with races and three years later I'm still running and racing. Unfortunately, my weight has gone back up way to high, but I'm working on it!
