Freedom Run 5K Race Report

Hubby and I had wanted to run a 5k in July and found one at the PERFECT price on the Fourth of July. You can't beat $8 for registration without a shirt! We signed up for the DeForest Community Bank's Freedom Run HERE.

It was muggy and sunny on race day morning. There were tons of park bathrooms and port-o-potties (due to weekend events). Loved that.

There were SEVERAL high school cross country athletes running the routes, that almost trampled me at the start. The 5K route had a couple of small hills, and one larger downhill. The rest of the course was rather flat. We ran on the paved road and even some sidewalks. There were mile markers at each mile, with volunteers calling out splits. There was one water station on the 10K course.

There was a 5K, 10K and 1 mile fun run. Prizes were given out to the top three male and female competitors in each race, as well as the top three finishers in each age group.

There were also several other events going on in DeForest for the holiday weekend, including a parade at 11:00 am that morning.

I was hoping to PR with a 24:45 or less (from my last 5K last November), or at least go sub 25:00 again, but I saw my watch hit 24:00 before I even hit the 3 mile marker ... and I knew I was going to PR today. I ended up getting passed by some gal that I had passed as she was gagging about .5 mi back at the end. I didn't stop my watch, but thought they called out 25:25 when I finished?! No PR in the cards today. Grrr..

I do know that I'm not fast and never will be speedy. Today, I realized how much more I love longer distance races, especially the half marathon. I found me pacing myself today, when I really didn't half do. This was only three friggin' miles. I could've pushed myself more, even in the heat. I do like the "relaxation" of long distance running.

I did get several comments and shout-outs with my red, white and blue socks from Chrissy's Knee High Socks HERE. That made the run all worth it! Stop by their website to get yourself a pair of their holiday line HERE for a Halloween 5K! All socks are $6.99 and they always offer free shipping when you order 6+ pairs!

  9. Great outfit. It's hard to run fast when it's so muggy out. If the race had been last weekend I bet you would have rocked it.
