Couples Couch to 5K

On December 14, we ran Madison's Jingle Bell Run for Arthritis with the latest couch to 5k group.  We started with nine couples nine weeks earlier, but after difficult family schedules, illnesses and a frigid fall, we lost unfortunately lost five couples along the way.  It was awesome seeing couples bond over nine weeks of training runs, holding hands, talking about their days, and motivating each other.  That's exactly why we developed the program for couples.  An active "running date night" was what I envisioned.  After nine weeks, they toed the really cold startline together. They slipped around together on the snowy 5K course.  And they all finished the 3.1 mile journey.  My hubby and I couldn't be prouder coaches of these amazing couples.

Congratulations - Ginger, Ryan, Brian, Melissa, Trent, Carolyn, Susan and Jim!!!

May you have many more active, date nights together!

Fellow Flowers Review and Giveaway

Have you caught the flower power action with Fellow Flowers yet?  You may have seen these bright, bold, colorful flowers popping up at various races you've participated in.  Female runners have united with these colorful buds attached to their ponytail, Bondi Band or running hat.   I first learned of Fellow Flowers last year.  I came across them online and then ran into them at various expos around Madison - and then at the Chicago Marathon.  Little did I know that one of the co-owners, Mel, lived a matter of miles from me.  An entrepreneurial runner, just like myself, I kept in touch with her on and off over the past year.  She had been made the leap and was making her mark in the Madison-running community - in a big way.  I especially loved seeing the enthusiasm of the young girls at local Girls on the Run events, enjoy the beautiful flowers that Fellow Flowers donated to each GOTR participant.  AMAZING.

The Fellow Flowers story (as taken from their website):

In January of 2011, Tori sent her friends an invitation: Run with me.

Her birthday wish was to run through the streets of Green Bay in the CellCom Half Marathon with her tribe of girlfriends. Thirteen of us responded. Why not? Okay fine. I need a reason to get in shape. I’m in. Can’t say no to a party. She’d do it for me. Bring it on.
Thirteen friends. Thirteen miles. Meant to be.

Despite similar circles, we needed some welcome love. Tori introduced us in an email: Wife meet mother. Teacher meet doctor. Nurse meet businesswoman. Working mom meet working mom. It could have ended with that. Great, we’ll see you all on race day. Good luck to you.

But it didn’t. One after another, we began sharing stories. Then reflections. All over email – a clumsy yet effective way to rant, dream, reflect and cheer. It was honest. It was heroic.

Usually, we consider time to be the key ingredient in building trust. Yet in 16 weeks, we covered topics like infertility, the loss of a child, abuse and abandonment, the pursuit of happiness, the realization of dreams, admitting fears – big fears – and releasing dreams – epic dreams. And we trained. Amidst juggling kids, families, coaching, jobs, dreams, sleep, making dinner and drinking wine, we trained.

On race day, May 15th, we had shared hundreds of emails. Poured out thousands of words. And rallied around one common understanding. We were not running a race. We were celebrating a journey.
And the flowers. Oh, our beautiful orange flowers. One might think it was an intentional effort. An orchestrated plan to unite. Hey, we need to make sure everyone knows we’re together – flowers, yeah. Flowers!

Nope, we can’t take the credit. A friend of Tori’s knew about our training and in the 11th hour (as in, the week before the race) she handed Tori 14 orange Gerber daisy flowers, lovingly hot-glued with barrettes and clips. You need to be able to find each other. People need to know you’re together. She was genius. Yes! Of course we do.

So in a moment’s notice, Fourteen women – powered by friendship – ran with flowers in their hair. Big ol’ orange flowers. We could spot them 100 yards away. And so could hundreds of others. The journey of a flower began.

Flash forward to October. Tori runs her first full marathon in Chicago. Running to the beat of a play list inspired by her 13.1 crew. Surrounded by friendship, flowers and signs, and inspired by the pride-filled shouts of her oldest son. Go, Mommy! To him, she is a superhero. Amidst 45,000 runners, a determined bright orange flower crossed the finish line and crushed preconceived notions. She rocked it. Emotions stirred. Feeling the love. Selfless-joy kinda love. This is so much bigger than me.

One week later, Mel ran a half marathon to celebrate her October birthday. Women watched in the bathroom as she snugged a big orange daisy into her running cap. Looking fierce, girl.

Life had been nudging Mel. Passion had started to call. She was starting to listen. A few meditative moments before the race, channeling the intention of her flower, she told herself, Make a plan. Dream the vision. Uncork the crazy. Lay it down. For the next two hours, she mentally mapped out a business plan in her head. She crossed the finish line with two new lovely and beautiful items – a rose from her oh-so-sweet husband and a razor-sharp clarity of purpose.

Later that night Mel texted Tori. I have an idea. Imagine if we could create a way for other women to take this journey?

Friendship + Running = Transformation. Are you in?

She was. Head over heels in. And here we are. Sharing the journey of the flower with you, with everyone.
A dream becomes a goal when you say it out loud. It becomes a plan when you write it down. It becomes your Anthem when you embody it and accept its presence as your destiny.

Bloom, baby. Bloom.

I am so happy to have Mel from Fellow Flowers as one of my mentors.  Each flower has a story, a meaning, a great sense of motivation associated with it.  After I decided to take my own leap of faith earlier this month, and pursue Running Diva Mom full time, Mel and I were communicating via email about having me host a review and giveaway for YOU lucky readers.  I was extremely excited to receive a personal note from her and the beautiful COURAGE tee and  green flower - to honor MY JOURNEY WITH RDM!  I was born to do this.

Your dream is out there.

This past week, I had the opportunity to tour the American Family Dream Bank (HERE) for the first time, in Madison, Wisconsin.  I met with the manager, Anne, who I really enjoyed getting to know.  I had been in the running for the Dream Bank contest last winter, and passed by the storefront several times this year on the Capitol Square.  However, I never took the time to step inside ... until Friday.

The Dream Bank offers all sorts of resources, classes and advice to help you make your dreams come true, help you step outside of your comfort zone, help you learn something new.  It's an amazing resource the community.  And, I'm extremely excited to be apart of it.  They offer active sessions, resume classes, entrepreneurial classes, cooking classes - the list goes on and on.

Our Dreams Define Us.

Dreams. They are the most valuable things we will ever own. They are the embodiment of our hopes, goals and aspirations. They empower us, drive us and define us – as individuals and a nation – and the pursuit of our dreams is a part of what makes life rich and meaningful. American Family Insurance understands the power of dreams and we created DreamBank to celebrate their transformative power. At DreamBank you’ll find interactive tools, events and experts on staff to help you discover your dreams, engage with your community and get the encouragement and resources you need to pursue and protect them.

They also offer all sorts of amazing, FREE meeting space for small businesses and entrepreneurs, including a "kitchen" area.  It's an amazing, functional - and inspiring - workspace.  I felt like I was at home.  I was surrounded by handwritten words, quotes and dreams of other "dreamers".  I can't wait to share the space with potential clients - and my children.

I worked with Anne on scheduling our first (of hopefully several ongoing!) Couch to 5K class after the new year.  I will also be doing some speaking engagements at the DreamBank, to help get people active and running in 2014.  I cannot wait to share my passion and my dreams at the DreamBank!!  This is going to be such a great opportunity for all of us to work together on our goals next year.  Stay tuned after the new year, for dates and times for the spring DreamBank Couch to 5K class.

Check out the Dream Bank Events Calendar (HERE) for upcoming FREE sessions and classes.  Little Diva, Little Dude and I are attending all sorts of classes being offered for families over winter break.  We look forward to baking projects, craft projects and active sessions - for all three of us to enjoy together.

The best part of achieving my dreams in 2014 is not only pursuing my passion; but having more time with these two special little people in my life.  After my meeting with the DreamBank, I was able to pick them up from school in the line of minivans, and then we went out for an after-school treat.  I was so excited to share with them many of the details of my new endeavors in 2014.  They know how important my dreams are to me and how much I've wanted to pursue them.  They also know how much I've wanted more time with them after school and during the summer.  Pursuing my dreams is going to afford me the opportunity to do this.  And I could not be more thankful for more moments like this.

Home Depot Kids Workshop

We always look forward to the first Saturday of the month.  We call it "Home Depot Day" in our house.  The Home Depot Kids Workshop is a FREE event for the whole family (HERE).

  • FREE hands-on workshops; designed for children ages 5 - 12.
  • Offered the 1st Saturday of every month at all The Home Depot stores between 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
  • Workshops teach children do-it-yourself skills, tool safety and instill a sense of pride and accomplishment.
  • All kids get to keep their craft, receive a FREE certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorative pin.
  • One workshop kit, apron and pin per child, while supplies last.

Little Diva and Little Dude wear their orange aprons proudly.  The back of the store is packed with young children, accompanied by family and friends.  Kids receive an apron at their first class and every class after, they will receive a special pin for each project they complete.  They also receive a certificate of achievement each month and a treat.

Kids and parents sit at plywood tables and on little orange buckets.  It is so much fun watching them get excited while they assemble their creations.  Little Dude loves hands-on projects and tinkering around the house.  Sometimes I think that he breaks things, just so that he can fix them!  He loves putting on his goggles at Home Depot and banging at a nail with a hammer, painting wood pieces and following written and verbal instructions along the way.  Little Diva enjoys tinkering away on Saturday mornings as well.

Our home is filled with lots of handmade cars, gadgets, boxes - and now a tic-tac-toe game.

What projects has your family made at
Home Depot Kids Workshop?
Do you have a favorite FREE activity
that you enjoys doing together??

SportHooks Danglers Review and Giveaway

I was introduced to SportHooks (HERE) by HeavyMedalz at the Madison Marathon race expo in November.  They offered an assortment of unique gifts for runners.  I loved their race bib organizers and medal displays.  These displays are a great way to pull those pieces of memorabilia out of the shoebox or nightstand drawer - and display them proudly.  And the coolest part is that they are fully customizable, too!

I was sent three of their Danglers (HERE) and chose the 26.2 dangler, Wisconsin 26.2 dangler and the Run Happy dangler.  I hung them on my tree and at my office desk. I love being surrounded by inspiration and reminders of the sport I love so much.

These Danglers are sold online from $9.99-$12.99.  They can be used as Christmas ornaments, holiday gifts, additions to your favorite bulletin board or office or a decoration on a wine bottle or bottle of beer.  The options are endless.  These make great gifts and stocking stuffers for that special runner in your life.

SportHooks offers marathon and half marathon varieties, Ironman, Disney Princess, and various states.

A leap of faith.

My story goes like this.

As I was going through my divorce three years ago, I knew that I would need to supplement my income to make ends meet.  I moved into a two bedroom apartment with my Little Diva and Little Dude in April 2011.  As I was unpacking my boxes, I received word that the local park and recreation program was looking for someone to lead their upcoming couch to 5K program - the following week.  A common friend thought that I may be a good fit.  It turns out it was a perfect fit.

With my running background, I was solely coaching runners on my experience and enthusiasm for the sport.  My blog was pretty well established in the area (since May 2009) and gave me some ground to stand on.  I did not have a competitive background, or a coaching certification, or a medical degree for that matter.  I was sharing my passion with others - and it became contagious.  Best part-time job - ever.  Over the next 2 1/2 years, I coached more than 400 people in the area (mainly women) to their first 5K - and beyond.  I hosted my first women's running retreat in Madison.  I made connections with running stores, businesses in the industry, gyms, chiropractors, nutritionists, magazines, participated in two tv commercials, wrote magazine articles, was featured in several magazine articles, the list of opportunities seems endless.

I've always been mom first, employee second, running coach third - followed by my own personal running and blogging journey.  Then, I added wife back into the mix of roles in September of this year.  It sounds like a lot to juggle.  And, it has been.  Having my children only half of the time, I have tried to push everything into the time when they aren't with me.  I've honestly also given up a lot of my personal running time to pursue the dreams of others.

I've been very happy in my position at the University of Wisconsin (as a "state employee"), but something has been missing for awhile.  I've been going through the motions in my position for almost fourteen years.  I am challenged, I am happy and I am surrounded by amazing people that I call friends.  Yet, my mind wanders.  I'm welcomed and distracted by constant "runner talk and questions" from fellow employees.  I'm that go-to runner in the office.  I think about running.  I think about fitting in one more couch to 5K class each season and meeting more people.

About a year ago - I found a quote that stated:

That changed things for me.

For at least a year's time, I have contemplated making my departure.  But how.  Insurance, loss of income, the unknown.  The timing has never been right.  Would it ever be?

I fell into my desk job at the young age of nineteen and have been content.  However, I feel that I have gone through so many changes in life.  I've changed - for the better.  And, I've grown.  I've learned so incredibly much about myself the past few years, that I can't even explain it.  It's hard for me to wrap my head around it sometimes.  I'm a leader.  I'm a motivator.  Heck - I'm a seven time marathoner.  I'm not the same chubby teenager that fell into a cubicle in 2000.  I really don't feel that I was put here to sit at a desk all day - even if I don't mind what I'm doing there.  I want to do more. I want to inspire.  I want to dream.  I want to make those dreams a reality.

As timing would have it, I attended Brava Magazine's Women's Expo in Madison recently and listened to Darcy Luoma, a local life and leadership coach, on the American Family Dream Bank stage.  I attended with a friend (and fellow dreamer) and Little Diva alongside me.  It was amazing to listen to Darcy's words of motivation and encouragement to pursue my dreams.  She even touched on marathon running and the goal-setting that runners set for themselves.  She got it.  Little Diva was aware of my dreams and just kept nodding and smiling and staring at me with amazement.  It melted my heart to hear her say "Mom, you can do it, you know you can.".  I told her that there was a lot more to consider when making such a decision, such as financial considerations.  She replied with an innocent, "Well, I don't want to go to Disney World if you aren't happy with your job".  Kids.

So, one week later - after the support of my husband, I made the leap.  I jumped.  I finally jumped.  I did it.  This week, I turned in my resignation to pursue Running Diva Mom full-time in 2014.  I look forward to making my dreams a reality.  I look forward to helping others achieve their dreams.  I look forward to helping manage a local running store part-time and making their dreams come true, too.

My schedule will be full.  Perhaps even fuller than it was before.  But, it will be great.  And, the best part is that I have been able to eliminate daycare and am able to pick up Little Diva and Little Dude from school when they are with me.  I'm so excited to have all of the extra hours after school with them and during the summer months.

Try telling a room full of doctors that you are quitting your stable career at an academic institution to, um, "coach a bunch of women to run 5ks and blog about it".  Yep, I got a lot of blank stares.  But they don't get it.  They don't get me.  As someone told me this week, "the people that know you and know who you are, understand you and are extremely happy for you.".  I was worried about telling my parents, but they have been mostly supportive and understanding.  Because after all I have been through in life, they just want me to be happy.  And, they know I am happy.  YES, I AM HAPPY!  I am so blessed to have such a supportive partner and family that I could just scream.  Our marriage vows stated that we would "believe in each other's dreams".  And, he is holding true to that.  I could just kiss him (OK, maybe I did.)!  We've had a few moments of panic since my resignation was submitted - like, what the heck are we thinking??  But, I believe I can do this.  And, he believes in me.  And if it doesn't work, at least I can say that I gave it a try.  How many people can say that they were able to pursue their dreams?

Me.  I did.  I am.  I will.

Have you ever taken a leap of faith??
How did you get there?
How did it feel once you finally jumped?
Any regrets??
