2013 Waunafest 10 Miler Race Report

This was my fifth or sixth running of the Waunafest Ten Miler Run (HERE) this past weekend.  The Saturday morning race, took place at 7:30 am in Waunakee.  Over 400 runners competed in this event and over 700 people participated in the 5K run.  Having run the race so many times, and it being so close to home, we arrived just short of thirty minutes before the start of race, picked up my packet and used the restrooms - twice.

I was super familiar with the course, and all of the hills (especially the second half).  It is really nice knowing where the tough spots are, the easy spots, the crowd support and everything in between.  The first half of the course zig-zags through the business park, which is quite boring and then through some nice neighborhoods and through a covered bridge.  At the half-way point, you head back through the industrial park and back towards the startline.

I had a full bladder much of the first 5-6 miles (despite using the handy bathrooms twice, with no lines prior to the race).  But, that quickly faded as each mile passed.  I still have not stopped to use a port-o-potty during a race.

Normally this race is super hot and super humid and I'm always empting out my handheld water bottle to quench my third.  It was CHILLY and breezy this year.  And at one point it started sprinkling lightly.  The raindrops were so cold, they almost felt like snow.  The sky was speckled with clouds and there was no sun in sight.  I felt cool and comfortable and felt like I had tons of energy.

At mile 7, we headed back to the starting area, which makes it really easy to see your family and race supporters.  It was awesome to see my kids and The Fiance bounce up off the curb to cheer me on.  I had a huge pep in my step at that point, because I kept playing the same 40 mins of musis over - my power songs.  The last three miles are a very familiar 5K course that I've running in previous events in the small community.  I was slingshot running with a few gals, running my pace.  In the end, I finished ahead of some, and others passed me.  I kept a very consistent pace of 8:40-9:00 mins each mile.

After I hit the mile 9 marker, I restarted a Nicki Minaj tune - twice.  And kept getting faster - and faster, as we approached the track at the baseball diamond.  I headed downhill and passed the last of the 5k walkers coming in to the final stretch.  I then passed a gal that I had been sling-shotting the entire way.  She sped up too and then we kicked it in to the finish line together.  She gave me a high five after we stopped our stop watches.

I love this event and will be back year after year.  A nice course with variety; a nice distance; easy parking/restrooms/facilities; close to home; and a great price.

2013 DMB Freedom Run 5K Race Report - Catalyst Couch to 5K

For the past nine weeks, I have been leading a group of new runners at Catalyst Activewear (HERE) in Madison.  We met at the store every Wednesday night and ran together on the Olbrich Path.  It was fun watching them grow from struggling with one minute of running - to completing a practice 5K on the race course in Deforest after nine short weeks.

I choose the DMB Freedom Run (HERE) 5K in DeForest on July 4th for their event.

We met up at Firemen's Park on race morning, a hot, sunny and humid one.  After meeting up with other friends and family that were participating or spectating, we posed for a few, cute photos.

They were all decided out in new running shoes from Catalyst - a even a couple pairs of matching argyle compression socks and Bondi Bands!  I loved their enthusiasm with the sport of running - and running gear!

The fiancĂ© also ran the 10K event.

We knew exactly what was in store for us over the next 3.1 miles, since we ran the course the week prior.  Some of them even went out again on their own to test the distance a second time.  The first mile was flat through residential neighborhoods, then we proceeded up and down the only hill on the course.  I alternated back and forth throughout the participants on the race course, trying to help each of them along, at various points of struggling.  I distracted them with conversations, Fourth of July plans, and reflecting on their nine week journey to the startline.

After 41 minutes - all of them had completed the race!  The fastest in a swift 23 minutes and the rest scattered out on the course through 41 minutes.  We even met up with Chelsea and Josh from the group at the finish line, who we didn't have a chance to meet up with before the race.  There were lots of sweaty glows and smiles after their wonderful performance!  I'm so happy to have gotten to know each and every one of them and watch their enthusiasm grow and grow.

Congratulations Josh, Chelsea, Tammy, Shannon and Sara!!

The Color Run Madison 2013 Race Report

I was very excited to run my second Color Run (HERE) this summer.  Last year, I ran Color Run in Racine, Wisconsin.  I was thrilled that they were coming to my hometown in Madison, Wisconsin this year.  I was asked to serve as a race ambassador and happily accepted the task.  Little Diva has really enjoyed running/walking alongside me, so I was able to get her into the race as well.  Little Dude has taken an interest in running, but he hadn't been "training".  I couldn't think of a better event for him to participate in his very first 5K.  The event is super fun, low-key and non-competitive.  There are lots of children participating - and kids under 7 yrs old are FREE (sans bib number or shirt)!  You can't beat that!

The kids and I headed to Alliant Energy Center's Willow Island for packet pick-up on Friday afternoon.  It was quiet and there were NO LINES.  When I had done race day packet pick up at the Racine event, we waited for 30-45 minutes.  This was a breeze - great, considering I had the kids with me.

We picked up our packets and stopped by the Color Run booth.  They had a lot of fun, affordable items - including knee-high socks, water bottles and apparel.  We picked up some colorful rubber bracelets to remember our first event together - just the three of us.

The race started at 8:00 AM. Parking was available at the Alliant Energy Center, but the traffic off of the Beltline was backed up. So, we parked at The Sheraton and walked with others across John Nolen Drive.  Later, The Fiance moved the Marathon Mommy Minivan closer to the finish line.

There was a 5-10% chance for thunderstorms that morning and the skies were dark and cloudy.  When we got to the muddy start line just before 8:00 am, the downpour started.  The kids didn't care.  We were surrounded by close to 7,000 other runners that were getting the party started at the startline. The MC was starting waves every minute or so - and Little Dude got a huge smile on his face, every time he counted down from 10 to 1.  We were in the tenth wave or so, before we started.

We splashed through tons of puddles and mud and onto a narrow path, near the dog park, where I've ran before.  As we approached the first kilometer, the race was halted and stopped before the big pink arch, where we were to be dowsed in red color.  Everyone was lined up for at least five minutes at the first "stop".  It was a perfect point for Little Dude to make his first stop after 8-9 mins of consecutive running.

The rain stopped the second half of the race.  We then ran/walked to the next four color stations - being covered in all sorts of colors.  Parts of the course were out and back.  Little Dude enjoyed giving high fives to the runners coming from the other direction.  When he wanted to walk, he would give high fives and start running again.  The color stations motivated him to keep momentum.

It wasn't until the last mile that he started falling behind and wanting to walk more.  Little Diva was ready to go and keep moving - though she's look back and decide to wait for us.  We all really wanted to finish together.

The colorful arch was marking the finish line and I kept pointing it out to Little Dude to keep going.  We splashed through a few more puddles, as we approached The Fiance with the camera near the finish line.

With all of the waiting at stations and walking - we ended up finishing together in 49 minutes.  We were covered in paint and wet from the rain.  Our shoes were soaked, too.  It only took us a few showers and lots of scrubbing to get the paint off of our bodies.  Their shirts came out of the wash tie-dyed - a great way to remember our first race together.

Gu Energy Review & Giveaway

I've been using Gu Energy (HERE) products for the past eight years.  I primarily have been using their energy gels, but have also enjoyed the chomps and occasionally the Gu Brew.

GU Energy Gel
GU Energy Gel provides athletes with a dose of 100 calories to deliver high-quality, easily-digested and long-lasting energy for athletes in every sport and at all levels. Everything inside each packet of GU is engineered to do one simple thing: provide your body with the essential nutrition it needs to keep going for miles and miles and hours and hours. It goes down easy, and it goes to work fast so you don't have to slow down.

What's in it?
  • Carbohydrates - GU provides athletes with a dose of 100 calories in the form of 70-80% maltodextrin and 30-20% fructose (The ratio depends upon the flavor.). Why the mix? It’s a complex carbohydrate, and studies have shown that some complex carbs are actually digested faster than simple sugars like table sugar and honey.
  • Amino Acid Blend - GU features a unique blend of amino acids to combat muscle fatigue, accelerate the conversion of carbohydrates into usable energy, and maintain mental focus.
  • Electrolytes - Sodium and potassium to replenish what is lost during strenuous activity.
  • Caffeine - Some GU flavors are caffeinated while others are not. We add caffeine for two reasons: It acts as a stimulant and it lowers the perceived effort.
How's it different?

An optimal blend of carbohydrates, the proprietary GU amino blend, and a full serving of Vitamin C & E. Oh yeah, did we mention taste? GU Energy Gel has the time-tested consistency and delicious taste that athletes have come to expect from the original energy gel.

How do I use it?
GU should be consumed 15 minutes before and then every 45 minutes thereafter.

My favorite Gu Energy Gels include Orange-Vanilla, Vanilla Bean - and the all time favorite, Mint Chocolate.  The mixture of carbs, electrolytes and caffeine give you the exact boost you need every 4-5 miles during a long run.  Not to mention, they are treat tasting.  I LOVED trying the Espresso and Peanut Butter flavors.  I don't think I could down 3-4 of them during a marathon but they are a nice change from the typical flavors during shorter workouts.  The Gu Chomps taste great and are easy to chew - and don't stick to my teeth like other energy chews.  These are similar to the kiddos' fruit snacks, but are packed with all of the good stuff that you need for your long workouts.  Fruit snacks for adults or active student athletes.  They actually make me feel like I have something in my tummy after I consume them - unlike the gels that I down, that don't aid my hunger.  The Gu Brew tablets give your water a slight fruity taste and fizz, without being over-powering.  I prefer the orange flavor over the lemon-lime and other flavors.  They are very easy to toss in your gym bag or purse.

2013 Girls on the Run Dane County Spring 5K Race Report

On June 8, Little Diva and I ran the Girls on the Run Dane County 5K (HERE).  I've ran the fall 5K in Waunakee several times, even coached it.  And, I also had the honor of running with Little Diva at her 5K last fall, to end her GOTR season.  This was only the second year of the spring event and I was excited to see what the race was like at McKee Farms Park in Fitchburg.  Girls on the Run is close to my heart and I always love their events.  They are lively, colorful and low-key/non competitive.  I am so happy that an organization like this exists for these young ladies.  It promotes self-confidence, positive body image and healthy eating habits and attitudes.

Little Diva and I showed up to the race, to join a sea of hundreds and hundreds of local girls, ready to run their first 5K.  The event started off in three waves.  There were so many little girls there, ready to run with their running buddy, coach, mother, father, grandparents, and friends.  It is so motivating.

Little Diva and I stuck together the entire race.  There were only a few small hills, which we walked, and I encouraged her to reach certain spots along the 3.1 mile course - mailboxes, fire hydrants, mile markers.

We loved the positive feedback and comments we received on our colorful Race Junkie Tutus (HERE).  That really boosted her spirit during times of wanting to walk.  She got a little pep in her step and kept moving.  During the last mile, she declared it an entire mile of running - and she moved on and on and on.  Then, when the last 1/4 mile wound around further than we thought - I saw a brief moment of panic across her face.  But she kept at it - and even passed me up at the finish line.

I was very, very proud of her and always love seeing all of the little girls receive their 5K medals as they cross the finisher's mat - and then head to the post-race snacks!  The girls were thrilled with all of the treats - especially the freezer pops on the hot and humid morning.

Race Junkie Tutu Review & Giveaway

Race Junkie Tutus (HERE) offers unique and custom tutus for runners and non-runners.  You can also visit the Race Junkie Tutus Etsy Shop (HERE) to place your online order.

Little Diva and I ordered custom Mommy and Me tutus for one of our upcoming races. We were able to pick the style, colors and the sizes fit us both perfectly.

I can't think of a better way for you to stand out in a crowd - especially  a race crowd.  This was an easy way for our family to spot us out on the course in a sea of other runners.  And we even ran into quite a few of our friends, spectating along the course, who spotted us in our tutus.  You can layer the tutu over running shorts or skirts or leggings.  They were a perfect addition to our running ensemble and were very comfortable to run in.

Little Diva and I knew that we would be wearing our tutus to the Girls on the Run Spring 5K, so I simply asked the company if they could make them in the bright pink and green GOTR colors.  And, they turned out awesome.  I also love the fun, blingy bows in the back.

These tutus are perfect for your average, local 5K event or any of the themed races out there.  These are a phenomenal addition for any of the Disney-themed races, including the Disney Princess Half Marathon.  Race Junkie Tutus also offers a lot of fun, super hero designs.  These are also great for mud runs, Ragnar Relay and other team events, where you want your group to stand out from the rest.

We will also be wearing our Race Junkie Tutus at the Madison Color Run (HERE) this weekend!

Med City Marathon 2013 Race Report

I was so happy to have the opportunity to serve as an ambassador for the 2013 Med City Marathon (HERE).  I was even more thrilled to have The Fiance joining me for his first 26.2 mile journey.  We did a lot of our training runs together my kid-free weekends over the winter and spring months.  We had a tough spring in Wisconsin weather-wise - which made it pretty unpredictable with our training.  We had everything from frigid cold temps, snow, rain, and intense heat.

We dropped the kids off on Saturday morning, and headed north several hours to the race expo in downtown Rochester, Minnesota.  We stopped in the Lacrosse area for lunch on the way.  Parking was available for free.  We picked up our packets in a breeze and were told that the race shirts were going to be "finishers shirts" and given to us after we crossed the finish line on Sunday.  The expo was small and I picked up a few headbands.   After the expo, we headed north to our friends' home in Byron.  Ironically, one of The Fiance's friends lived just a mile away from the elementary school in Byron, where the startline would be staged.  We arrived at their home and they drove much of the country roads and course with us, which really helped us gain perspective of the course, the hills and scenic landmarks.  Much of the course is on paved paths in town, so it was helpful to see the various parks and neighborhoods we would be running through.  We then dined with their family at a family-friendly pizzeria in town.  We headed back home for a relaxing evening of chatting and early to bed.

We woke up to the alarm at 5:30 am.  I quickly rolled out of bed and got dressed in my race attire, that I strategically layed out with my bib number and timing chip the night before.  I applied my makeup (yes!) and headed downstairs for the first of several potty breaks and then tried to eat some breakfast.  I always have difficulty chewing the morning of a big race, and this morning seemed to be even worse.  I downed yogurt, but then had trouble chewing my cereal.  I tried several bananas, but they also made me gag.  I loaded my handheld water bottle with some H20 and stored four gel packets in it (I only ended up using three of them).

At 6:30, our friend and his daughter drove us one mile to the startline.  The race was starting at 7:00.  It was dark and looked like a storm was brewing.  We got out of the minivan and quickly adjusted to the wind and frigid temperatures.  We were grateful we brought along some long sleeve options and layered them over our short sleeve technical tops.  After a change of clothes, we headed to the startline to a sea of runners.  The half marathon, relay marathon and full marathon would run much of the course together.  The full marathon would have only 350ish runners - compared the the 45,000 runners I ran with at Chicago Marathon.  The size seemed comparable to Madison Marathon, Lakefront Marathon in Milwaukee and Haunted Hustle Marathon in Middleton.

    And, soon, we were off!

The 26.2 mile course is available online (HERE).

    The marathon course description:
The Marathon starts in Byron, Minnesota; a community of 4500 people 8 miles west of Rochester. After running a couple of miles in Byron, runners proceed on rolling country roads for six miles. The course then traverses about 6 miles along a creek and lake before entering the neighborhood streets and parks of Rochester and finishes in Downtown Rochester. The course is closed to traffic and very scenic. Miles 8 to finish are relatively flat. Course is USATF Certified and a Boston Qualifier.

We headed on a frontage road and then onto sixish miles of rolling hills and country roads.  When we drove the course the night before, I feared the hills and the amount of them.  However, I didn't struggle with them like I thought I would.  We were on pace with about 9:30-9:45/min miles.  I had no lofty goals for this race - I was no near my recent 4:02-4:11 finish times.  I felt like I was just "shuffling" along.  I didn't feel like I had power in me - but I was moving.  The Fiance just had a goal of finishing.  But, I could tell that he had a lot of energy in him for the first eighteen-or-so miles.

I was struggling with a cold all week and even took a day off of work the week prior.  The cold was effecting me and I felt slugglish and tired.  I sipped on a gel packet over a four mile stretch (and would consume only two more over the rest of the journey) and continued to take water from my handheld bottle.  I grabbed lemon-lime (ew!) Gatorade at almost every water station along the course.

At about mile 8, we were welcomed to Rochester by spectators and headed out on a nice flat path that wound us all through town.  The path was beautiful and reminded me of the Pheasant Branch Conservancy in Middleton, WI.  Much of the rest of the course continued to be flat, which was appreciated.  However, I felt really, really deflated by my cold.  I didn't say much to The Fiance about it until the nine mile mark.  Knowing that I still had seventeen miles ahead of me -and I wasn't even to the half marathon mark - I wasn't sure I would be able to finish.  I felt paralyzed inside, but kept moving.

We passed some over a bridge and a pretty stream with waterfall, followed by more path.  I kept trudging along and picking up Gatorade, hoping I would catch a burst of energy from it.

There was a marathon relay and we quickly realized that they were all wearing white bibs on the back of their shirts.  They were passing us left and right with their speed - because they were only running a fraction of course.  It as completely deflating.  I hated it.

Around mile 11-12, the half marathon runners headed in toward the finish line and we split off to the left.  It was very isolated and quiet.  At one point we laughed and commented how we felt like we were out together on a training run.

We saw our friends sometime after mile ten.  It was uplifting to see them.  The volunteers and spectators were super motivating and supportive.  But, the clusters of spectators were at the suggested spectating spots or at the exchange points.  The rest of the course was pretty quiet.  Volunteers and police officers are always super, super encouraging!

We headed into the beautiful Nature Conservancy and it was beautiful under the tree cover.  I enjoyed those couple of miles, even though I felt like quitting.  I asked The Fiance if he wanted to go ahead, but also said that I didn't think I could finish if I were alone.  Of course he stayed with me, as I cranked my tunes and we left the Nature Conservancy and out onto a busy highway for the next mile.  As we turned the mile 15 marker, we ran into our friends with these cute signs.  It was right when we needed them.

And, then the rain came.  It rained ... and it rained.  I was so grateful that we put on that extra layer of long sleeves.  I could not have continued otherwise.  My hair was wet and my clothes were dripping.  We dodged puddles and I thought our shoes stayed relatively dry ... though I found out later that they weren't!

At mile 20 I felt better - much better.  I got a surge of energy.  The Fiance said he needed to use the bathroom and would catch up to me.  I knew that if I stopped, that I would not be able to get started again.  I zig-zagged the next few miles along the river and through a park.  I kept looking back through the rain, and eventually saw The Fiance behind me in the horizon.  I was feeling good, and he was slowly catching up.  We ran into our friends, who were seeking cover in their minivan, around mile 23.  The Fiance was not far behind me at this point, with just over three miles to go.  I kept telling myself - only a 5K to go ... !

We headed back along the river and I was trying to calculate times in my head.  I had no clue where I was at with pace, but I knew from the beginning that I wasn't going for a PR - or anywhere close.  As he still hadn't caught up to me, I ran a couple minutes back to him.  It was a great moment, when we caught up again.  We zigzagged all over the place together.  If I had to retrace my steps of this full marathon course - I wouldn't be able to.  I don't recall looping so much in one course.  The last two miles seemed the longest  ever - even if we were going the slowest ever.  Some people were walking - some were passing us.  I could tell he wanted to quit the last few miles and I stuck with him.  Afterall, he had stuck with me for the first twenty miles, while I felt like absolutely no energy.

We never walked - the entire 26.2 miles!!!

We just ran together - slowly towards the end - and approach that Mile 26 sign!  What a sight!  I said, "You are a marathoner, Babe!".  And he got very emotional and teared up.  He got some energy and sped up.  I said, "Now, don't go passing me to the finish line!".

We smiled as we approached the wet finish line (maybe me more than him!), with our friends cheering to the left, cameras in hand - barriers lined with sparse spectators, umbrellas and empty bleachers.  Not quite the overwhelming noise at the finishline with cheers and cowbell like those I had in Chicago - but quite memorable nonetheless.

We finished together and continue to be a great team - even in an individual sport.

Thank you to the Med City Marathon for allowing me to participate in this event and write about our journey.  I enjoyed experiencing the Rochester-area on foot (the BEST way to explore a new city!).

And, thank you to our wonderful hosts and support crew in Byron - Mike, Jenny, Kyla and Ryan.  You were the most thoughtful, coordinated and supportive crew we could ask for!!
